Engin Bermek is President of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. Professor Bermek is Head, Department of Biophysics, I.U. Istanbul Medical Faculty. His scientific interests include: 1) mechanisms and regulation of gene expression and, in particular, of translation in eukaryotic organisms; 2) elongation factor, guanine nucleotide and ribosome interactions, 2) post synthetic modifications of proteins, in particular ADP-ribosylation reactions, and 4) molecular immunology-hybridoma technology and modulation of immune response.

Awards include the TÜBİTAK Award of Science (1986), the Yaşargil Award of İstanbul Medical Chamber (1986), Award of Science of the İstanbul Medical Chamber (1992), and the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Award (1996).
