Growth in Student Numbers

Between 1960 and 1996, the number of universities in Africa increased from less than 20 to nearly 160. Student numbers grew by 8 percent per year, from 119,000 to almost 2 million over the same period. Funding of higher education generally matched the expanded number of universities and students during the 1960s and 1970s, but has fallen well below growth in student numbers since the early 1980s. The expansion phase of the 1960s and 1970s was followed by a retrenchment phase in the 1980s and a renewal phase in the early 1990s.
