As discussed more fully in Chapter 1 of the report, the Study Panel not only organized four consultative workshops in Africa to generate input from African scientists and policy-makers, but it also commissioned four background papers on issues of special interest or concern.

As the documents so produced -  reports of workshops and background papers - will be of interest to a wider audience than the members and staff of the Study Panel, they are all reproduced in this section of the IAC website and made available for downloading.

The IAC wishes to stress that, unlike the report itself, these materials were not subjected to IAC publication procedures, such as review by independent experts and to editing and formatting in accordance with IAC guidelines. Accordingly, the materials in this section are presented as submitted to the Study Panel. They have not been reviewed, edited or styled, nor are they approved or disapproved by the IAC.   

However, the IAC fully recognizes the value of the input into the study process from the workshops and the background papers. The IAC therefore vwishes to express its sincere gratitude to the participants in the workshops and to the authors of the background papers for their essential contribution to the work of the Study Panel and, through the Panel, to the final report.
